Hi

I managed to boot in install crux 2.5a on the ibm box, the only thing is that I'm having problems compiling the kernel. How ever I compiled the kernel the image does not boot.

The way i installed crux os is that I copied the pseries vmlinux boot image and kernel modules from the boot cd and installed the yabootloader.

I also tried the pre configured kernel config file for pseries also no results here.

with what kind of options in configuration should I cehck for the power5+ cpu and platform when compiling.

Is there any way to get the config file that was used with the kernel image on the bootcd

After i use my boot image the result is the white screen returning from prom_init

if I use the image from the cd it boots normaly to login

Any suggestions???
Thanks

it could be a framebuffer problem. You need to patch the vanilla kernel if your Power machine is equipped with a GXT6500P video card.

Please give a try with 2.6RC2 too.

Yes, inside is a GXT6500P video card.

I also tried installing gentoo linux with no success, the boot process hangs at a white screen return from prom_init... turning on text mode did not do the trick.

the only CD image of linux that actualy booted was cruxppc.

I'll try to install the latest version of crux 2.6RC2. At first maybe I'll try patching the kernel first.

If I get this to work and hopefully kde, gnome or xfce.
I'll be posting detailed instructions on how to install linux on this machine

Also if any testing is needed for the new release just send me a private message.

Thanx for now. Since I'm not at home, I'll be testing this on the weekend.

ok, thanks. About bootloader settings and kernel patch you can find usefull this POWER 275 post:
http://cruxppc.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=326

the only thing is you 'd set serial speed to 19200bps.

Thank you! the eServer seems to boot now. :)

I patched the kernel source and now the newly compiled kernel boots!

I have one question did actually anyone succeed installing gnome or kde on to a IBM ppc64?

I'll try the new version of crux 2.6. when I have the time.

Hi GregorJ

I also try to installing cruxppc 2.6 on a IBM 9111-285 power5+ Intelistation, but with lack of success.
Did you use make boot procedure for 275 (its power4 series) describe on this forum?

Best regards

Cashkee

Are you able to successfully boot CRUX PPC 2.6 (64bit) from cdrom ??

Sorry... I still havent found any time to test the 2.6 release.

But the install for 2.5 was strait forward following the instructions on the hand book.
The only thing is that you have to specify the boot CD drive which in my case was /dev/scd0.

For everything else I think you'll find the information on this thread.

I'will be posting detailed results on the 2.6.

No time for fun just work...

So I finaly found some time to test the new release of crux 2.6.

The booting process went well and again I came upon the same thing about the kernel configuration. compiled kernel crashed

so I used the same workaround as in 2.5 copied compiled kernel from cd.

So now the kernel is compiling ... again and it will for some time.

Greg.

Hi, un update...

After playing around with crux I noticed that the X environment is pretty unstable compared to the 2.5 version of cruxppc.

Well the fault is probably kernel driver for gxt6500p, after looking at the kernel patch. I noticed that there is no real driver for the this card. It's only patched to recognize the card. Are there any more details on this particular card.

I tested opensuse 11 which officialy does not support this card, but after patching the kernel source and recompiling it the opensuse linux booted normaly.

gnome environment works great under open suse. except for the colors under X.

The X environment was the same result as on cruxppc except more stable.

Officially there is no driver available for the gxt6500p. There is however the built in support by the IBM AIX 5.1L and 6 Unix system. It would be nice if the kernel source was available for the driver. ;)

thats all from me

Greg.

today the only other choice could be a GXT135P formerly a Matrox G450 DH 32MB PCI with IBM microcodes.
