Crux PPC 2.2 is close to a beta release... the beta phase will probably be short as it was run for a while in a close-to-final stage, using Crux X86 2.2 ports with no major problem.
Newer iBooks reached full hardware support with airport-extreme now working using fwcutter; cpu frequency scaling, suspend, power saving are working like a charm; the weird touchpad is fully functional with synaptics driver and direct rendering is working with minor problems on Ati Radeon 9550 using Tillman's experimental Xorg 7.1 modular ports :)
64 bit support is still unfinished but it might be ready soon...

So if you're interested in trying the latest and the greatest please stay tuned! :D

The Crux PPC Team :wink: :wink:

Jan 12, 2007 * UPDATE
With a bit of delay :oops: Crux-PPC 2.2rc1 is coming up soon. Thanks to the hard work done by Acrux, a new iso being tested and is almost ready (NullPointer will add 64bit support and update the handbook in the next days).
The not-yet-published iso features Genesi EFIKA support and some other enhancments. In the while developement on the new 2.3 toolchain has started.
Please stay tuned... testing is welcome as usual and particularly needed for 64bit Archs and for IBM CHRP. :wink:

well here it is, as we promised... this is a working 2.2 iso... many minor things gotta be fixed, but you can start trying this if you really can't wait!! :wink: :wink:
Please don't read the handbook included in the cd, follow 2.1rc handbook instead, remembering that we don't have devfsd any more, so you need to pass root=/dev/hdc (or whatever your cdrom is) to the yaboot prompt after Apple32... when you're mounting dev and proc and sys to the filesystem where you're going to chroot, you should use sth like mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev...
Unfortunately we forgot to put parted on the iso :oops: so it's useful only for Apple32 PPCs and you can't use it on Pegasos, but we hope to make a new iso soon (maybe monday) :)

here the links:

we're really looking forward to hear your feedback!

cheers

I'll release, as soon as possible, a cruxppc 2.2 iso "iBook G4 memorial edition" :twisted: . This one 'll be hardly optimized for G4 processor and equipped with xorg-7.x and last 2.6.17rc_ kernel. There 'll be included all needed packages and config files to fully work with iBook G4 .

This is, obviously, an experimental release not aligned with official 2.2 and there 'll be no support for it.

Acrux

Well i wasn't able to fix things and make a new iso so far, but at least i tested and used the 2.2alpha iso...
As far as i see the system is stable and runs smoothly, everything runs fine, but...

previously known issues:
* Handbook refers to crux 2.2 for x86, it gotta be rewritten;
* parted is missing on the install filesystem, this makes this iso impossible to install on a PegasosII with umpartitioned hard disk;
* there is no 64bit support yet;
* firefox is missing, you have to build yourself if you need that.

freshly discovered bugs:
* the cvs package is not included, and even if it were, it needs to be taken from the ppc repo, as this will add the driver for ports in etc/ports/drivers... ports needs that to get ports from the ppc repo;
* the included cairo package will not allow pango to build with cairo support, this will result in an error when trying to build firefox... if you're using this iso please uninstall cairo, rebuild it from the x86/opt repo, and then build pango, firefox and whatever else you might need that relies on pango.

more bugs (and hopefully fixes :wink:) coming up soon, on this forum of course. :lol:

Hey folks,

2.2alpha install from CD-boot to kernel compile went off without a hitch... now i'm just wondering what the standard operating procedure for ports tree setup is... i see both cvs and rsync files in /etc/ports... and i see the note above about not having cvs in the cdrom... what's my next move to get some fresh software?

-thanks for everything, i demoed a few other distros between 2.1 and 2.2alpha, and i had to come back.... =]

[peace]

--edit--
copied the Pkgfile and cvs file by hand and prt-get installed cvs without issue.... think i'm in the clear now.

--update2--

further news... i seem to keep getting 'shell-init: ...' errors complaining about symlink-hooks not working/not being found and 'getcwd' failing .. it hasn't seemed to manifest itself harmfully to my eyes yet, but i'm not terribly observant....

Hey Hackedhead, thanks for testing!! :)
I really don't understand this last problem you're pointing to... will you please explain again? sorry but i don't get the situation or how to reproduce that...
Maybe this is related to something that has been fixed with some toolchain adjustments (if you update the ppc ports you will see new kernel headers in glibc, new binutils, and a patch that fixes some old function aliasing problem in glibc sources on non-x86 archs that came back with binutils 2.17...) made after the 2.2alpha...

nullpointer,

I'm not really sure what caused the problem either, probably sth i did unawares, but at any rate, with the free time i have decreasing and my relative inexperience, i think I'm just gonna wait for the next revised iso (one that has cvs available and maybe the toolchain fixes you mentioned.) I don't feel quite smart enough to tackle the alpha0 release again, but if you release another (even just alpha1) i'll be more than happy to give it a whirl.

-hh

WHackedHead, thanks for testing anyway.
I fear you will have to wait until the first days of september because i'm without ppc now (i'm on holidays), and i guess Giulivo is away as well...
No the next won't be alpha any more, it will be release candidate... i found out people are too scared when you put alpha beside the release number... plus it's been in alpha long enough to skip the beta ;-)

cheerz :)

in ppc/ repos, you can find all the ports for the specific architecture (that you cannot find in x86 repos), and all the x86 ports that you cannot build without errors. we check the building on core and opt repos, not for contrib because the number of ports is very high:
Code:
shinji@eva-01 ~ $ ls /usr/ports/x86/contrib/ | wc -l
538
shinji@eva-01 ~ $

regards..
