$ acrux, 23 Jul 2006 - crux-ppc-2.2rc1-ibook_g4.README $
# CRUX PPC 2.2rc1 'iBook G4 Memorial Edition'

This ISO is based on a slightly modified Makefile and setup from CRUX PPC 2.2alpha. The upgrade function it's based on x86 one and it's not tested.
Newer Apple iBooks reached full hardware support. All the packages are hardly optimized for G4 cpu and compiled with aggressive CFLAGS, some configuration files are personalized too, pci.ids and usb.ids are updated and there is xorg-7.1 from Tillman's repo. As editor there is nano and vim and mc too, there is no more pine.
For x11r7 repo it's suggested to follow:
http://crux.nu/Main/InstallingX11R7/
but mesa3d port is changed:

and if you are looking for a working xorg.conf.. it's here:

There is no bluez, alsa, airport extreme fw and cd burning tools. The following xorg-7.1 packages are not included in this iso9660 because their very long name:
Code:
xorg-font-bh-lucidatypewriter-100dpi#1.0.0-2
xorg-font-bh-lucidatypewriter-75dpi#1.0.0-2

The included beta Handbook now refers to CRUX PPC 2.2 and you must follow it, there is a little tedious advise when you chroot, during the installation steps, in your new system so i suggest to you to reload profile with:
Code:
~# source /etc/profile

Here there is the URL to download this ISO:
[274MB]

This is, obviously, an experimental release not aligned with official 2.2 and there'll be no support for it.

greetz,
Acrux

p.s. my router is down :? then acrux.httpup and acrux_ppc.httpup 'll be offline untill i go back to Naples from my trip around Greece.

I've installed this experimental release. It works partially: in fact, X server doesn't works because it doesn't find default "fixed" font. I've tried to use acrux's xorg.conf but the result is the same.
The rest of distro works good.

yep i was with Bisco when he tested the 2.2, we also installed the ports xorg-font-bh-lucidatypewriter-{75,100}dpi and generated the font{scale, dir, cacheb} but no way, we couldn't figure out how/where to find this default fixed font...
One more thing, in the xorg.conf the keyboard keymap refers to some unknonwn macintosh keymap, and X obviously complains about that... Acrux will you post that or explain the differences with the default map???
thanks,
bye

Hey Peter,
This edition is fully compiled with G4-specific optimizations that make use of altivec and autovectorization to take advantage of the vectorial unit (but no patch like libfreevec was applied to glibc, will this happen in future we'll get extremely high performance boost), so it's supposed not to work on G3.
It might be nice to know whether it works on G3 (i will test myself as soon as i see my iMac again), but i really doubt it will...
have fun :)

Just to be sure it won't work i tried it on my iMac G3...
The best i could get out of it was the following message after mounting the filesystem on cdrom:
Code:
init has generated signal 4 but has no handler for it

this will probably happen on G3 with any binary that uses altivec.

bye

Really??? sounds weird to me... i tried on an iMac G3 and Acrux's CRUX PPC 2.2rc1 'iBook G4 Memorial Edition' couldn't even start init claiming illegal instruction.
Anyway if it works i'm glad for it

This is due to the fact that installer will install the fonts but won't create the fonts.scale, fonts.dir and fonts.alias.
It gets solved either by running the post-install script that you find in Crux's x11r7 repo in the port xorg-font-misc-misc or by running the following commands.
Code:
mkfontdir /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc
mkfontdir /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc

It's likely that there will be some more post-install scripts to run before things run smoothly.

have fun

if you are using "iBook G4 Memorial Edition" please read the following email:

Hi folks,
my "x11r7" ports repository is now hosted on crux.nu, under the name
"xorg".

If you're using the x11r7 repo, please update your system like this:

Code:
cd /etc/ports
rm x11r7.rsync
wget -O xorg.rsync "http://crux.nu/portdb/?a=getup&q=xorg"
rm -rf /usr/ports/x11r7
ports -u xorg

Port names or contents didn't change of course.

Regards,
Tilman

"iBook G4 Memorial Ed." release is out of sync with official CRUX PPC then don't download it.

ASAP it 'll be available an experimental CRUX PPC 2.4pre1 (for the moment only chrp and pmac32) officially supported by our Team.

greetz,
