we missed ext4fs support in every boot kernel, it'll be in next rc2 iso.

Trying to bring up X results in:

Fatal Server Error
xf86MapDomainMem(): mmap failure

I saw references to this as a problem with 2.6.29, but wonder if the same issue is in the 2.5rc1 kernel?

I saw it discussed here, and also a patch or two for linuxPci.c from Ben H and others:

http://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/5951/

I tried to find it so I could patch it myself, but couldn't find it for some reason. the full path they reference is:

xfree86/os-support/bux/linuxPci.c

The cli works very well of course...

YES!!! It works!!

Thank you so much for pointing me to xorg-server. I applied the patch, and voila - a working X with no errors.

Now X for 2.5rc1 is behaving nicely for my G5 iMac.

I used the last patch I saw from Jesse Barnes at 2009-02-07 , 23:15:20

You guys are my heroes!

Fine, we can remove the patch from xorg-server e provide the patch for the kernel while it won't be included in the official tree

Didn't go too smoothly this time. Maybe it is me, but this is what I ran into starting from mac-fdisk... (note that the md5sum was checked against the iso and they match). Tried another burn at low speed - the usual stuff.

Once I reached the SETUP phase to install packages, I could only install the core components without error. If I tried to install all three, OPT and XORG at the same time, I was met with a setup warning "Abort Installation?"

I continued on and tried them individually - both OPT and XORG would fail by stating that some packages were already installed, and to do a -U to fix them. These errors appeared benign, so I installed them anyway, doing it individually for OPT and then again for XORG. Same errors, but it looks like they got installed anyway.

And, even though I chose NOT to select individual packages, the dialog window came up on OPT and XORG showing me that all were check-marked.

At any rate, I continued on...

Update: I fixed my yaboot.conf problem, but ext4 is fighting me I think. More to come now that I've had some sleep. :)

I'm up and running with 2.5rc2 with X!

WOW!

Thanks guys - aside from the benign error messages in OPT and XORG, everything is beautiful!

What was really unexpected was that on my G5 iMac, X came up without any screen shifts, the legacy memory issue was taken care of, and to top it off, the ONLY thing in my /etc/X11/xorg that I had to add manually was

Code:
Section "ServerFlags"
     Option   "AllowEmptyInput"  "false"
EndSection

That is ALL that my xorg.conf consists of!

All I can say is wow and thanks. I was expecting that I would have to recompile xserver-xorg and the nv driver myself with patches, but to see it come up working perfect like this as a default was a total surprise.

Nice work! Crux-PPC is now officially the smartest distro I have used.

About the only trouble I ran into was trying to get ext4 to work, so I reinstalled with ext3. It was most likely my problem, so I'll dig into that later.

remember that booting from Ext4fs isn't possible with yaboot 'cause is unable to read from this filesystem instead ReiserFS is supported from version 1.2.3 and SGI XFS from version 1.3.4. An external (ext2 or ext3) boot partition is required for ext4 root partition.

from CRUX PPC 2.5 Handbook:
Note A special bootstrap partition of 800k is needed to install the yaboot loader on Macs; mac-fdisk has a special key to do this. Also consider that yaboot can't read kernel images from JFS and Ext4fs partitions, so if you intend to use those as root filesystem, a supplementary ext2/ext3 partition is needed to store the boot kernel images.

about SETUP issue... it'll be fixed asap.

For some reason I can't get the 64-bit version to be recognized as bootable on my Apple G5 iMac for 2.5rc3.

I have checked the md5sums, burned as an iso (noted that the handbook and release notes are 0-byte files in /crux in both the iso and on the cd), and tried different media and speeds.

Normally I have no problem booting by holding down the C-key, using the alt/option key to bring up the boot icons, or even using openfirmware boot prompt:
Code:
boot cd:,\\:tbxi

All of these seem to access the cd, (except for the alt/option where the boot icon for the cd doesn't even show) but it just doesn't seem to find what it is looking for to boot for installation.

Am I missing something? (probably) Do I need to modify the openfirmware boot command?

I did not try the 32-bit version per the warning that it won't boot on 64-bit hosts.

Update: I tried 32-bit anyway, and it failed to boot as expected - although it did get to the boot prompt where it eventually failed. The 64-bit cd doesn't even get that far.

sorry, I haven't tested it on Apple hardware (because I don't have any), I'll investigate!

YES! That mini-test iso booted fine. I took it past install64 and even played with vi and mc a bit. I think you nailed it!

on iMac G5 17" iSight the mini-iso boots and the kernel messages scroll on until this message:
Code:
console handover: boot [udbg0] -> real [tty0]

and then the screen freezes on this, even if the system goes on booting correctly, you can login and give commands (you hear cd seeking on commands... and a reboot or halt will work). system fans will spin full speed after one minute, but everything works fine except the framebuffer.

On my G5 iMac 20" (rev A, no als or isight), the fans scream and never settle down (luckily just cold air), and it takes a kernel recompile with at least G5_defconfig to get it under control.

We have the same video card so I'm surprised to see the screen lockup issue on yours. Does adding a kernel parameter like
Code:
install64 video=ofonly

help at all?

Nice to hear from another G5 user!
