I came from Gentoo and when I started to install CRUX I did "mkdir /mnt/hda" expecting to be able to make a place to mount my file system, but I couldn't because the installer uses the CD-ROM as its root file system (error: read-only file system).
The Gentoo installer somehow uses a ramdisk as its root file system which is handy because it allows temporary changes to the file system setup as you work through installation.
Does CRUX PPC not have this option? Is there a kernel parameter you can pass to mount root into a ramdisk? If this option is not available, I think CRUX would be better with this feature.

We decided for not using ramdisk because we have to provide about six different ramdisk on the installation iso because of the different kind of machine that we support; so the size of the installation iso would increase very much.
Also loading ramdisk on some embedded platform is very heavy (think about efika).
If you need a temporary rw filesystem you could use /tmp (of course on /tmp is mounted a tmpfs!)
But, why should you use a temporary rw filesystem while installing cruxppc? Isn't the installing procedure suggested on the handbook good for you?

The cruxppc's keyword is orthodoxy:
